Southside Cabernet

I can't even tell you who the Cubs new pitching coach is... But I'm pretty sure he doesn't have his own line of wine.

I'm certain this White Sox dude's stuff is delicious. Pretty sure they have a vineyard next to The Cell.

mmm tasty!

Go Cubs Go

I call this photography: chicaGO CUBS GO

I am not certain if they did this on purpose or not, but I must say: It did catch me off guard.

I swear I have looked up at that marquee hundreds if not thousands of times. . . and yet, it was as if I was looking at it for the very first time. Glorious, really

Back To Work

Wrigley Field Renovation 1

Well Sir, What more can be said?
Sure it is disappointing to see our Bear's season come to an end. But we aren't going to mope around and feel sorry for ourselves.

No sir. It's time to get back to work.

Just this morning, scaffolding started going up on the Addison side of The Stadium. We will give her a look see and let you know what they are up to.

Wrigley Field: Bear Down, Chicago Bears!

I must say - this here is pretty darn impressive: Wrigley Field showing her support for our beloved Bears. Chicago flags are waving in the snow blowing wind as the grand marquee tells the tale. Go Bears

Bears vs Packers 1941

Bears Packers Wrigley Field
This coming Sunday will mark the return of playoff football between the Chicago Bears and the Packers of Green Bay.

The last time these rivals played in a post-season game was back on December 14, 1941 - at our beloved Wrigley Field. Now, I asked our blog historian - and my brother - Harold to dig up some information on that there game. He obliged:

The Bears won the '41 game 33-14 to claim the NFL's Western Section Championship, and set up the NFL title game at Wrigley Field two weeks later. 43,425 fans attended the Packers game, but only 13,341 came to watch the Bears beat the New York Giants 37-9 in THE NFL Championship.

The '41 game was played one week after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This uncertainty led to this report (and accurate prediction) from the Tribune: "It may have been the last time these two titans of the gridirons will meet for a long, long time. If so, the fans will have plenty to remember them by until this war runs its course."

Most don't remember, but that month the Cubs were set to install lights at Wrigley Field. The steel for the poles was already at the field and the lights were ordered - but after that day of infamy, the club decided to donate the steel to the war effort.

Interestingly, that Tribune reporter also mentioned that the game: "didn't need that specially designed fifth quarter." The NFL didn't adopt "overtime" until 1942, and I guess before the game the two teams agreed to play a sudden-death fifth quarter if they were tied at the end of regulation.

One last fact: 1941 was also the year the Bears fight sing was published: "Bear Down, Chicago Bears" We sure do wish ol' Wrigley Field was hosting the game this weekend, but no matter, let's just hope our boys Bear Down on Sunday.

Bleacher Etiquette

I have always enjoyed sitting in the bleachers, you can't beat the atmosphere. But I've seen some changes and have been distracted from the game by some of them. That ain't good, that ain't good for nobody. I took a picture of one in particular. A young man who thought everyone behind him wanted to see his underpants. This is ridiculous. You want to wear something like this take yourself across town to whatever that ballpark's name is.

More Proof Cardinals Fans Are Morons

Soccer At Wrigley Field

My jobless Grandson informed me that there's this speculation going around that soccer - of all things - is going to return to Wrigley Field.

I'd say it is nothing more than conjecture, but it did motive him to put this here model together - so we will go with it.

Apparently a team by the name of Manchester United will face off against the Chicago Fire. My brother and our blog historian Harold tells me that there hasn't been soccer inside the Friendly Confines since the Chicago Sting would play from time to time. Their last game was back in '84.

Is it a good idea? Couldn't say.

Will a soccer field still fit? Danged if I know.

Will it give the marketing boys something to do and make a buck for the Ricketts? I reckon it will, and I reckon that is reason enough to believe it'll happen.

Wrigley Field Photos of the Year

Well sir, the year began with many improvements to the old ballpark and that ever eternal hope for our team. But, 2010 was marked more by marketing gimmicks than by victories, and - once again, we are left to wait til next year.

From the player banners of Opening Day, to a stadium - half-filled - witnessing another lose. From a football field that didn't quite fit, to the passing of a Cubs legend... I tell ya - it sure was memorable.

Here are our photographs of the year 2010.
